Over 50s Vitamins

As people age, their bodies have different needs, and if you want to look and feel great as you get older, you need to know which over 50s vitamins you simply can’t do without.

Vitamins are great because they make up what we lack in our diets, so even if you aren’t particularly strict with what you eat, if you take the right vitamins, you will be doing a lot to help your body get what it needs to fight off illness and generally stay younger for longer.

Calcium

As you age, your bones tend to become less dense, and this can cause a lot of problems, especially for women. Not only are women at a higher risk for developing problems such as osteoporosis, but a lower bone density also means that even minor falls could result in breaks and fractures.

At 50, you should be taking at least 1,500 milligrams of calcium each and every day, especially if you aren’t getting enough calcium from your diet.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of those over 50s vitamins that you will start taking in your 20s, but you need to continue taking them well into your old age.

Keep in mind that if you live in an area with fewer hours of daylight each day, you’ll want to increase your intake of this vitamin. How much you take will usually depend on your needs, so you might want to inquire about getting a vitamin D test to ensure you are taking enough.

Iron

Iron is particularly important for women because they tend to struggle with iron levels throughout their lifetimes.

The dosage of these over 50s vitamins will usually depend on your specific needs as an individual, including your current vitamins for over fiftiesiron levels and whether or not you are pregnant, so be sure to ask your doctor about this before you start supplementing your diet with iron.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins are great for over 50s because they contain just the right dosages for men and women at this particular age.

Many multivitamins for younger men and women do not contain vitamin B12, for example, or they contain lower levels of the vitamin, but this ingredient becomes increasingly important for those who are ageing.

The reason multivitamins contain higher dosages of vitamin B12 is because, once an individual reaches their 50s, their gut doesn’t absorb this vitamin as well as it did before, and so the body does not get as much of the vitamin as it did before.

It is therefore recommended that individuals who fall within this age group take about 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 on a daily basis, either by consuming over 50s vitamins or by supplementing their diets with the right foods.

Vitamins assist the body in functioning more effectively, and they work to stave off a variety of illnesses. Knowing which vitamins are important in your 50s ensures that you focus on giving your body what it needs to work better, and ultimately have you feeling better for longer.

  1. As soon as I hit 50, I started taking Centrum50+ Vitamins, as I was afraid that going through the menopause would cause an array of problems for me. I suffered with endometriosis from the age of 21 and had various cysts growing constantly on my ovaries. I managed to have one daughter before I was advised to stop trying to become pregnant again, as my cysts were rupturing and sent me to emergency, twice. I have many friends my age that have suffered enormously with the menopause so I was very apprehensive to what awaited me. I have to admit now, that it was the best thing that did ever happen to me…I was reborn. I had no more pain, no more worries about cysts and absolutely no symptoms of the menopause others were suffering from. I feel rather guilty…3 years after my periods stopped, I still have no symptoms. I religiously take my vitamins with the fear that if I stop, my menopause will suddenly show it’s ugly face.

  2. I agree that it’s important to take a hard look at our diets, particularly over the age of 50. I tend to be deficient in many of those mentioned, and take calcium and magnesium daily, as well as a B complex vitamin, and vitamins D and C. I try to eat a balanced diet, but these days, that doesn’t seem to be enough. One thing I do is take my vitamins with a full glass of water, because I also tend to be chronically dehydrated. Just doing something like that can become a habit, and since I have been taking my vitamins daily for years, taking them with a full glass of water helps to alleviate some of the symptoms of dehydration such as headaches and fatigue.
