Turning 50 is an exciting and daunting experience. It is a time when most people tend to get a thorough understanding of who they are, and a time when many are enjoying the perks of establishing themselves within one career or another.

Turning 50 is also daunting because it comes with an increase in health risks, which is why it is important to know which checks to get once you hit this mark.

The Thyroid Hormone Test

One of the most important over 50s health tests is the thyroid hormone test, which produces the hormone necessary for metabolism within the body. Ageing can have a negative impact on this system, which in turn can have a negative impact on a variety of systems throughout the body, including sexual functioning.

Rectal Examinations

The rectal examination isn’t something that people look forward to, but it is a very important screening to have after 50. This test identifies problems within the colon, including the possibility of developing colon cancer, as well as issues within the prostate.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure tests are conducted regularly the moment an individual begins to reach middle age, but at 50, this test becomes all the more important. High blood pressure can end up negatively affecting a variety of areas, including the heart, eyes, sexual organs and kidneys, among others.

This over 50s health check is extremely quick and cheap, and could end up preventing an individual from experiencing a diverse range of difficulties.

Blood Sugar

If you are over 50, you should be getting your blood sugar over 50s healthlevels tested at least once every 3 tears, possibly sooner if recommended by a medical professional. Diabetes is something that can be managed, but if it spirals out of control, it could end up affecting every area of a person’s functioning.

A quick over 50s health check in this area can end up extending a person’s life, as well as their quality of life, by many years.

The Pap Smear and Pelvic Exam

Cervical cancer can be treated when it is found early, and women will generally need to go for these checks at least ever three years. Women between the ages of 50 – 65 can extend this date to five years in the event that they have a combined pelvic exam and pap smear.

It is generally believed that women who are over the age of 65 do not have to continue obtaining a screening if they have had three negative pap tests in a row for at least 10 years. This is something that requires the consent of a medical professional.

Skin Checks

One of the most important over 50s health checks is the skin examination, which is something that both you and your doctor will be responsible for. It is up to each individual to check their skin for unusual spots and moles on a monthly basis. Each year, a medical professional should do a more thorough examination.

Health checks can extend your life by ensuring that any problems are caught as soon as they appear – make sure you give yourself that chance by committing to these regular screenings.
