4 Ways To Learn New Things Over 50

Who says you can’t learn new tricks just because you’ve reached middle age? Continuing to learn is just as important for the over 50s as it is at any other age. In fact, learning at this stage in your life can be very rewarding.

Research shows that life-long learning helps to promote happiness, improve self-worth, increase job opportunities and can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

There are numerous ways you can learn. Here are some of the best ways that those who are enjoying life over 50 can continue learning.

1. Adult community college

Most towns and cities have at least one adult community college. These offer a wide range of certified courses that can last from one day to several months. You can take courses that lead to specific qualifications like GCSEs or perhaps a dog grooming qualification.

Many adult community colleges offer support for students and their staff go through checks for skill and safety.

2. Open University

The Open University is a great way to learn something interesting. You don’t even need to pay for a degree, as there are numerous free short courses available online. These courses are great for those who are self-motivated, as you can learn at your own pace.

The free courses are great for finding out more information, but there’s no end test, so if you’re looking for that, you’ll need to find another learning option.

3. Online colleges

Since the birth of the internet, we’ve seen the formation of online learning centres or colleges. These centres of education are completely online based and offer several courses on numerous topics, so you can tailor your learning to your specific interests.

Online courses can cost anything from just a few pounds to a couple of hundred. Some courses will result in a nationally recognised qualification, but others won’t. It’s always best to check reviews from past students.

4. A UK university

Life over 50 doesn’t mean you can’t go to university. Research has shown that many people over 50 have started to attend university. Many of these mature learners have also taken out student loans to fund their education.

Be sure to check whether you are eligible for a student loan and any associated costs.

Life over 50 doesn’t mean you can’t learn something new. Learning can be very rewarding and fulfil a purpose in your life. Check out the options above for learning opportunities in your area.

  1. Haha, I’ve never thought I would be searching for ways to learn new things over 50 but here I am. Up until a few years back I thought I was done with learning. I was the kind of person that thinks their learning ends with school. Now I know that’s not the case. Just started learning (or trying to learn) French with the wife and it’s kind of fun. It’s not easy but I feel good about it. I’m now thinking of joining an online college.
